Jackie Burns, FIAAA Essex, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

Jackie Burns is a Fellow of the International Association for Astronomical Artists, a science communicator, and a multi-disciplined artist. Her media includes, but not exclusive to, acrylic on canvas, drawing, digital, fibre, glass, metal, and jewellery. Mission Statement is: Inspiring people to the beauty of aerospace and astronomy, and the natural beauty of Earth and all that exists on it.

Science and art are two sides of the same human impulse to investigate and explain the world around us. I can’t create art without science: from the geological minerals and synthetics used in my paints, glass work, modelling, and metalwork; the land husbandry required to create my paper, canvases, inks and dyes; and the math and electronic expertise used to support my digital work. And science cannot be expressed or communicated effectively without art - from the written word, diagrams, models, oral presentation, film making, periodical and book illustrations...the list can go on and on.

I exhibit my art and crafts throughout the UK (and occasionally internationally) at conventions, astronomy fairs, galleries and universities. I have a client list and I also sell directly through social media and on-line venues.

Whilst my main speciality is science (and in particular space science and astronomy) I also work on Earth-based landscapes, flora and fauna. I love my speciality, but in order to keep my enthusiasm and skills growing I also work in a broad range of different subjects and media. This includes creating and delivering workshops in-person and on-line across all ages and abilities. PowerPoint/Keynote presentations is something else that I’m experienced in providing. I can work on my own or as part of a team.
