Martin Sloan North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

Growing up as a military ‘brat’ through the troubles in Northern Ireland among other places has had a profound effect on my artistic make up. I have strong identity yet often do not feel a sense of belonging, I have a small studio in North Yorkshire from which I work primarily in oil on canvas

As an artist I have always been interested in aspects of the world around us, ranging from gestural graffiti, a crack in the pavement, aspects of nature and the architectural forms within it. The landscape itself is important to my practice, be it a restless city like New York, the fierceness of Catalan or the simple beauty of Nidd gorge in Yorkshire where I live ; it all goes into the mix. I’m interested in the sensation, gesture, and essence of a landscape. The language of painting itself is also a primary interest.
