  Back to profiles

After a long career in the arts, Fran is now based in North Cornwall and has returned to painting. She has been a professional artist since 2020. Lockdown provided an opportunity to deepen her practice with online tutors and she completed a year-long in person course at Newlyn School of Art in 2023.

I have travelled extensively through India, North Africa and the Himalayas and my work is an emotional response to the landscape both abroad and in Cornwall. I am most at peace by the sea and am fascinated by the textures and shapes of the water and the colours of the sky, whether a summer sunrise or a winter's storm. Using both oil and acrylic I play with bold colours to create abstract and semi abstract paintings on a variety of structures, evoking memories of my travels and the sense of home. I use a variety of mediums to create texture, including wood ash, marble dust, sand, pumice and modelling paste.
