87a CRITS offers a unique opportunity to join a community of peers, develop your practice in a supportive setting, and engage in critical dialogue about contemporary art.

Whether you are looking to test new work, gain feedback, or connect with other practitioners, this programme is devised to help you grow as an artist.

Notes from the 2025-26 cohort:

"87A has felt exciting, underground, DIY. Artists meeting purely out of a want to discuss their ideas is a beautiful thing to me. It has left an imprint on my practice and I am very grateful for Jo and Evie for letting us into their studio."

"87A Crits has been a real benefit to my arts practice. Engaging with artists at different stages of their careers, in a safe and supportive environment, opened up a space where I felt comfortable bringing unfinished or uncertain work. The responses I received genuinely helped to shape and evolve the direction of my practice."

"It’s been an honour to be part of 87a CRITS inaugural cohort: regular sessions produced with verve, intensity, humour and cake by Jo Hepburn and Evie Lucas. We got stuck in immediately, everyone was open to this type of artist led critique and things were interesting and honest from the start - no holding back, plenty of space for truly open minded discussion, wondering, sharing knowledge and sometimes vociferously exchanging views on certain aspects of art making.. good stuff!"

We look forward to receiving your application.

Who is eligible for this opportunity?
All artists.
When is the deadline?
1st August 2026
Can I have input into the structure of the crit session?
Yes. Shaping the structure of the crit sessions is an important part of the programme. You’ll have the freedom to devise new ways of discussing and exploring your practice, whether through traditional crit formats or more experimental approaches. We encourage participants to co-create the sessions.
Is there cost involved?
This opportunity is completely free of charge, no fees involved.
The only investment is your time and energy. You’ll be expected to:

- Attend monthly in-person crits in Cheltenham
- Show up for others, not just yourself
- Approach the group with generosity and honesty

What you put in, you’ll get back.
Will there be opportunities to curate work?
Yes. A big part of the crit programme is exploring how your work is encountered by others. There will be opportunities to curate or present your own work, and to experiment with different ways of sharing it in the sessions. We’ll support you as you develop and trial your curatorial skills.
What are the session dates/times?
Sessions are held monthly in the evening. Exact dates will be set in consultation with the group after selection.
Will sessions be documented?
Sessions may be documented for programme purposes. Participants will be asked for consent before any material is shared publicly.
Is 87a a funded programme?
No, 87a CRITS is not currently funded. Jo and Evie run the programme from their studio and volunteer their time and energy. The project is non-hierarchical, both Jo and Evie participate as artists, contribute their own work to the crits, and are fully involved in all aspects of the programme alongside participants.
When will I hear back?
We’ll notify all applicants by 21 August 2026.
