This exclusive collaboration provides the opportunity to be one of the 20 artists interpreting the iconic photograph of HRH Princess Margaret, taken by Ken Griffiths. The chance to have your work exhibited in a London based exhibition in 2022, and to be included in a book about the project.

This project involves an artistic reinterpretation of the picture that Ken Griffiths took of HRH Princess Margaret in 1985 holding a pillow embroidered with the sentence 'It's not easy being a Princess'. It was an incredibly iconic photograph, which became the cover of The Telegraph on the day her death was announced. In the light of the coming 20th  anniversary of her passing away, on 9th February 2022, we decided to commemorate the image by inviting 20 extremely talented artists to reinterpret it according to their style and vision.

Please note that although we are launching the project on the 20th year since the Princess passed away, it aims to be a celebration of the iconic photograph taken. It is not to be intended as a celebration of the monarchy nor a deliberate act of critique towards it. Rather, we aim to encourage fresh perspectives and dialogue over themes that are now more than ever important for us as a society. Thus, there won't be limitations in terms of one's reinterpretation.

Please keep in mind that the final work you create must have a recognisable resemblance or a conceptual relatedness to the photograph. Viewers should be able to easily tell the artwork is the product of a collaboration between The Ken Griffiths Bureau (in this case represented by the photograph) and yourself. This is the most important part, so make sure this is clear so that there won't be any issues with the final work. 

Media

We are happy for you to think creatively and utilise any medium of your choice. This includes working with a single medium or mixing different media together. Please get in touch before beginning your work so that we are all onboard, especially as we plan the exhibition and the design of the book.

Size

There are no limits on size, however, the piece will be showcased at the exhibition, therefore if you wish to make an unusually big piece ask us for the space specifics to make sure it will fit.

Number

Ideally, we are asking you to come up with just one piece of work. However, if you wish to make more versions it can be discussed.

Sale of artworks

The sale of the artwork will be agreed upon between the artist and The Bureau before the exhibition and can include sale of a physical piece of artwork, limited edition prints or in the form of minted digital files which will be sold on the blockchain as Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). Discussions can take place to sell the works as one of those listed or as all types, depending on the artists’ wishes.

Deadline

The work must be completed/made ready by end of Otober. This will allow our designers and editors enough time to design the book and of us to prepare the prints, exhibition and so forth.

Percentages and Costs

The contract will give a more detailed description of the percentage breakdown as this is dependent on the format each artwork is being sold. The Bureau will be covering the cost of the exhibition, book and marketing for the event.
