The Superposition is a self-organising network of artists, scientists, and makers in Leeds and one of the most productive and connected groups in the North of England. ASMbly is a pop-up studio/laboratory/workshop in the city centre, facilitating cross-disciplinary collaboration between artists, scientists and makers. Being open to the public provides a range of crucial engagement opportunities with audiences through collaborative processes, such as touring pieces/ group visits, talks, hands-on experiences and activities.

ASMbly (A(rt)S(cience)M(aker)bly) Lab  is our annual pop-up studio/laboratory/workshop in Leeds city centre, facilitating cross-disciplinary collaboration between artists, scientists and makers. ASMbly 2017 runs from Wednesday 26th July to Sunday 6th August.

The Lab is open to the public and this provides a range of crucial engagement opportunities with audiences while enabling collaborations to develop with other Lab participants. Previous ASMblys have led to the touring of SciArtworks across Europe to festivals such as Ars Electronica or to works becoming permanent installations at research facilities such as DESY Synchrotron in Hamburg.

To increase our critical audience engagement, this year we are designing an exciting programme of talks, critiques, exhibitions, workshops and hands on visitor activities.

Participation in the Lab is free and is a unique opportunity for three reasons. Firstly, it is a chance to make and experiment in an environment that fosters collaboration between Artists, Scientists and Makers/ Technologists that is non–hierarchical and where the main concern is the making of interesting and/or beautiful objects, experiments and artworks. Secondly, it is an opportunity to explore areas of research interest with people who share similar concerns but come from different backgrounds. Thirdly it is chance to develop new works or collaborations or test or develop/ refine existing works in a supportive and skill sharing environment.

ASMbly 2017 is proudly supported by Arts Council England Grants for the Arts and Leeds BID
