Report this?

My name is Yudi Zhang and I am a Doctorate PGR at the University of Aberdeen seeking interviewees for a study on generative AI in visual art practice. If you have experience creating AI-based artwork, I would love to hear about your creative process, thoughts on AI ethics, and reflections on the relationship between human creativity and AI. Interviews last 30–45 minutes.

This research study, titled "Generative AI in Visual Art Practice: Rethinking Creativity, AI Ethics and Human-Machine Relationship", explores the impact of generative AI on artistic creativity, AI ethics in creative practice, and the evolving relationship between human creators and AI.

It is part of my PhD research in Visual Culture at the University of Aberdeen and has received ethical approval the Committee for Research Ethics & Governance in Arts, Social Sciences & Business.

I am looking for participants aged 18 or older who have experience with generative AI art practice, ideally those who have created AI-based videos, films, paintings, installations, or similar works.

Participation involves a single semi-structured interview lasting approximately 30–45 minutes, typically conducted online via Microsoft Teams.

You may optionally share examples of your AI-based artwork during the interview to support the discussion of your creative process. The interview will be audio-recorded for research analysis purposes.

Each participant will receive £10 compensation in the form of an Amazon gift card or equivalent cash, provided within one week of completing the interview.

Participation is entirely voluntary, and you may withdraw at any time before, during, or within four weeks after the interview without providing a reason.

Your data will be stored in pseudonymised form.

You will be able to choose your preferred level of identification in published findings, ranging from complete pseudonymity to full attribution with your real name.

If you are interested, please click "Make a submission" and provide your name, email, a brief bio, a description of your major works, and, if applicable, any experience with your works being selected for AI art competitions, film festivals, exhibitions, or galleries.

You are also welcome to upload images of your work and/or links if you would like.

Thank you for your participation.

What is the purpose of the study?
This study explores how generative artificial intelligence (AI) is changing how artists work and think about creativity—specifically AI systems that create visual content using machine learning architectures such as GANs, diffusion models, and multimodal large language models. It focuses on three main areas: how generative AI transforms artistic creativity, the influence of AI ethics principles on creative practices, and the role of generative AI in advancing new aesthetics and knowledge. The research aims to better understand the experiences of people who use generative AI tools in artistic creation, including how they think about authorship, aesthetics, and responsibility.
Why have I been invited to take part?
You have been invited to participate because you are 18 years of age or older and either:
• Skilled practitioners who work with generative AI art as artists, researchers, or curators
• General users who have experimented with generative AI tools in their creative work
Do I have to take part?
Participation in this research study is completely voluntary. This participant information sheet has been produced to help you decide if you would like to take part in this study. It is up to you (and you alone) to decide whether you wish to take part. If you do decide to participate, you will be free to withdraw from the study at any time without giving a reason, and with no detriment to you.
If you also decide you no longer want your contribution to be included in this research and associated publications, you will be able to withdraw your data until 1 month from the date the data is obtained. After this point in time, it may not be possible to delete existing information about you where it is already being processed or published as part of the research data and removing the information would affect the integrity of the research already undertaken.
How do I give my consent to participate in the study?
It is important that you give your informed consent if you decide to take part in this study, and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions in relation to the research before you provide your consent. If you are happy to participate in the study, you will be asked to complete and sign a consent form. You will be issued with a signed copy of the consent form to retain for your personal records.
What does taking part involve?
Taking part involves a single semi-structured interview conducted online via Microsoft Teams, lasting approximately 30-45 minutes, or in a study space within the Sir Duncan Rice Library if you are in Aberdeen and prefer an in-person interview. The interview will collect your opinions and experiences about generative AI in visual art practice, including your creative processes, thoughts on AI ethics and regulations, and reflections on how AI has influenced your artistic identity and practice. If you are willing, there may be follow-up discussions for clarification or additional insights.
You may optionally share examples of your generative AI artwork before or during the interview to facilitate discussion of your creative process. The interview will be audio-recorded using Teams recording functionality for research analysis purposes. You can take breaks during the interview or decline to answer any questions.
The interview will take place at a date and time to be agreed with you. You will receive £10 compensation (Amazon gift card or equivalent cash via email, bank transfer, or payment platforms such as PayPal, Alipay, or WeChat Pay) within one week of completing the interview. Participants will receive compensation if they have completed the interview or participated in part of the interview process. Participants who withdraw before the interview takes place will not receive compensation. Participation is entirely voluntary and you can withdraw at any time before, during, or within 4 weeks after the interview without providing a reason.
Are there any risks associated with taking part?
The risks associated with this study are minimal. However, some questions may ask you to reflect on your personal creative experiences or on regional AI policies and content censorship, which you may find emotionally sensitive. You may choose not to answer any question or to end the interview at any time.
If any discussion brings up discomfort, you will be offered a break, or the conversation can be stopped. You are always in control of how much you choose to share.
Are there any benefits associated with taking part?
Participating will provide an opportunity to reflect on your creative practice and relationship with AI technology. Your participation will help advance understanding of how generative AI transforms artistic creativity, informing future research and policy discussions about AI in the arts. By sharing your experiences, you contribute to better documentation of generative AI art practices. You will receive summaries of research findings that may provide insight into broader trends within the generative AI art community.
What will happen to my data?
Your data will be stored in a pseudonymised form during the research process. You will be referred to by a unique code (e.g., “Participant 1”) in all transcripts and analysis documents.
You will choose your level of identification in published findings: complete pseudonymisation with no identifying details, partial identification allowing discussion of your published works with pseudonyms, or full attribution with your real name if you prefer academic credit. For those choosing attribution, the key linking codes to real names will be retained until publication is complete. For those choosing complete pseudonymisation, the linking key will be destroyed within 48 hours of project completion.
All data generated by the study will be stored in research specific drives on secure servers of the University of Aberdeen and only accessed or transported by encrypted and password-protected devices. It will be retained in accordance with the University of Aberdeen Research Data Management Policy for 5 years after the project end date and thereafter permanently deleted in accordance with University IT data security procedures. You can also consult the University’s Privacy Notice for Research Participants for further information on how we manage your data - https://www.abdn.ac.uk/about/privacy/research-participants-938.php.
Will my participation be confidential?
The data you provide will be analysed and may be used in publications and other scholarly means of disseminating the findings from the research project, but this will be done in such a way that your identity is not disclosed unless explicit consent has been given to publish it in a fully identifiable form.
How will I find out about the results of the study?
The full PhD thesis will be made openly accessible through the University of Aberdeen library. Upon study completion, all participants will receive a summary of research findings via email, including key themes and main conclusions about generative AI in artistic practice.
Who is funding and/or sponsoring the study?
This project is self-funded by the researcher.
Who has reviewed the study?
The research has been approved by the Committee for Research Ethics and Governance in Arts, Social Sciences & Business, University of Aberdeen on 15 September 2025.
