This show highlights the integral role of care, who performs it, and the various shapes it can take. I invite artists with any form of caring responsibility to submit work that is inspired by or renders visible historically hidden caring duties to reimagine what a contemporary artist and caregiver look like.

Who Cares? celebrates artists who are also caregivers, opening our minds to what a modern artist might look like, one with caring responsibilities.

Not only will this exhibition provide a platform for artists who are caregivers, but it will also create a network between these artists - something that many artist-parents have sought when trying to break back into the art world after having children.

Once artists are selected, I will be holding a Zoom discussion between us to build relationships and learn more about their experiences as an artist and caregiver and what the unique struggles they might have faced are.

This will provide an opportunity for artists to connect, learn about artist/carer groups local to them and encourage further projects together.

Visibilising care work in the art world will encourage us to be more mindful of the multiple roles a modern artist has, being sensitive to each other’s needs and creating a more caring working environment.

Being an artist and caregiver are two roles that have historically been conflicting; this exhibition seeks to highlight the integral role of care in society and change how galleries view artists with caring duties.

This is an in-person exhibition but there is no expectation to be present during the show dates.

The Fringe Arts Bath will take place 24 May to 9 June 2024 but exact date and location of exhibition is yet to be confirmed.

Submission deadline: Friday 12th April at 23h59 GMT

  • Free submission. All are welcome to apply, of any age, status, and from anywhere in the world.
  • If selected, we ask Artists for a £22 contribution (like crowdfunding) and/or to give some of their time, as we are all volunteers. Please read our FAQs here to find out more. Your fee goes towards hiring the exhibition space, annual insurance, website hosting, tools and equipment, white paint, coffees for volunteers, printing and social media posts — functional stuff.

To submit your work:

  • Media accepted: All mediums.
  • max 200 words about your work and how it fits the call-out (written, audio file, video or another way to suit you).
  • some images of the work, or links to video/performance work (or existing work if it hasn’t been made yet).
  • any relevant links, if you have them (though it’s not a requirement and Curators might not have the capacity to visit them all).
