On the surface of the ground and under the sky is our shared situation. Our art practices are the shared language we use to process, observe and explain it. There is no theme for this exhibition. It is our final one in Unit 2, after 12 incredible months together. It has been an enormous privilege to see the breadth and depth of work and hold a space for this strange and beautiful thing we do.  The EPIGEAL open call therefore invites image, material, object, gesture, records, and works of all kinds, for a show that simply celebrates art making as a ubiquitous component of human experience.

EPIGEAL

(the final show)

On the surface of the ground and under the sky.

It’s where everything we did, happened. Captured in stories, photographs, souvenirs, and journals. Held hostage in museums. Squirrelled in someone’s attic. Felt in your body. The receipts of our actions. The reminders.

It’s the site of our entire emotional experience. Where we squeeze each other tightly. Where we do whatever is possible to sooth our boredom.

Every side eye, eye roll, and glimpse takes place here. Everything that comforts, excites, and confuses. Everything that we noticed.

Where we take root and up root. Where spaces, walls, and lines are made. Invitations are extended. Powers are given, upheld, challenged, and resisted. We nurse our wounds. We grow. We break through.

Learning and unlearning, making and unmaking, ripping it all up and starting again.

On the surface of the ground and under the sky is our shared situation. Our art practices are the shared language we use to process, observe and explain it.

About the venue, Unit 2:

Unit 2 is a dynamic gallery and project space dedicated to contemporary fine art, based in the heart of St Leonards. We exist to provide opportunities for artists and curators at every stage of their career. We want to be a fresh alternative to the usual commercial or institutional gallery models. Our focus is platforming engaging fine art from a wide variety of artistic contexts.

We are at 8-10 London Road, St Leonards TN37 6AE

Unit 2 is in the heart of St Leonards’ creative community.

A five minute walk from the mainline station, 1h30m from London Bridge, an hour from Brighton, and moments from sea, we are in the thick of one of the UK’s most exciting emerging art destinations.

The rich cultural history of Hastings and the surrounding area is the landscape in which we situate ourselves.

We are coming to the end of our 12-month tenancy in the space, and will be hosting this group show as a celebration of art-making and a final showcase of the project.

All are welcome to apply.

Our private views are popular, with several hundred visitors over the opening night and weekend.

Our £10/20 hanging fee simply covers our costs as a non-profit, volunteer-led organisation.

Pieces of work that are straight forward are subject to a participation fee of £10, and more complex pieces £20, if selected to take part.

There is no commission on sales.
