Project Farsley are seeking expressions of interest from mural artists to complete an outdoor mural in a location in Farsley, Leeds in Spring 2024. Deadline for expressions of interest: Sunday 2nd July 2023 at 11 pm. Artist fee: To be quoted by the artist on application.

Who is Project Farsley?

We are a collective of creative residents from the village of Farsley, Leeds. We came together following a Leeds 2023 project in 2021 called My World, My City, My Neighbourhood. With a shared desire to continue to activate creative happenings in the village, Project Farsley was born and this commission is the first in what we hope will become a series of murals across the village.

Stage 1: Artist Open Call

May - September 2023

We have received seed funding from Leeds 2023 as part of their My Leeds Community Fund. With this funding, we are conducting an Open Call for expressions of interest from mural artists to design and create an outdoor mural.

From these expressions of interest, we will shortlist 5 artists to complete a design proposal based on the brief co-curated through community consultation. Each of the 5 shortlisted artists will be paid £100 for their submission. The artist fee for the completed work is to be agreed with the chosen artist.

The winning design proposal will be decided by the below voting parties. The 5 design proposals* will be shortlisted to 2 by Project Farsley and the property owner. The 2 shortlisted designs will then go to a public vote by Farsley residents.

Panel

Property owner (The mural is to be positioned on the gable end of a residential property)

Project Farsley members (This group is comprised of 10 core members)

Farsley residents  (Farsley residents will cast their votes in person and online through community engagement activities at a village event on Saturday 26 August 2023.)

*Please note: We reserve the right to remove proposals from assessment in the instance that there are doubts relating to the feasibility of the delivery of the finished works. The £100 fee will only be paid to artists on receipt of the submission of a completed design proposal.

Timeline:

  • W/C 29 May 2023: Open Call starts

  • Sunday 2nd July 2023 at 11 pm: Open Call closes

  • W/C 28 August 2023: Final selection made by the panels

Stage 2: Delivery

March - June 2024

Considering time and climate, we aim to have completed the mural by June 2024, which means delivery of the work will take place from approximately March 2024 subject to weather and site conditions.

Please note that this stage of the application process is just a collection of expressions of interest from artists. Please only apply if you have the experience and knowledge required to complete an outdoor mural.

About the site

Full site details and brief will be provided to the shortlisted artists on invitation to complete a design proposal. However we can say at this stage that the proposed site is approximately 4m wide by 5.4m high. We will provide scaffolding for the artist to access the site.

We look forward to hearing from you.
