Submit your work to the FOOD & LOVE issue of Filler Zine: a food and mental health publication based in Manchester.

FILLER Zine is a self-published magazine which explores matters of food and mental health - asking artists, designers and writers to contribute their thoughts to each issue. The title of issue 04 will be SOFT SPOT and will provoke discussion around the inextricable links between food and love, eating and care, obsession and guilty pleasures, and any other link you can make between the two!

I’m looking for odes to your favourite food, a menu for your ultimate date night, illustrations of your childhood food memories, ratings of the world’s natural aphrodisiacs, your recipe for the best breakup binge...the list goes on.

From our favourite flavours, to the nostalgia of childhood meals, from the first dish anyone cooked for us to the local takeaway that unknowingly gets us through a heartbreak, this issue of Filler will ask you to explore your own links between food and fondness, attachment, weaknesses and obsession, from self-love to aphrodisiacs.

Filler has a contemporary style with an aim to make discourse around our lifestyles, eating habits and mental health more accessible, and I welcome artists working with all media, from diverse backgrounds and with varied experience.

Who is eligible for this opportunity?
Artists, creatives and writers of any background or experience level, from anywhere in the world are welcome to submit. Unfortunately, the publication doesn't have room for everyone so I will let you know in due course whether you have been successful or not.
How many works can I submit?
You can submit as many as you like! You might have several pieces you want me to consider, but I cannot guarantee that all of them will make it to the publication. Sometimes people will submit two or three projects that respond to the theme, but I might pick my favourite to be featured.
Are there payments to artists?
Unfortunately I'm a student and a one woman band, so I can't currently pay the artists involved. However, if you are included I can post a copy of the zine to you for free* when it is released!

*Free for UK contributors, postage cost will apply if overseas.
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
Successful submissions will be promoted on FILLER Zine's Instagram and Facebook page in the run-up to the publication's release, and will have their work featured in the print publication with full credit.
How do you decide on submissions?
A lot of factors affect whether submissions are successful or not, for example work that shows a creative and thoughtful response to the theme is likely to be of interest. I'm particularly interested in biographical work that raises awareness or shares personal experience. Take a look at FILLER's Instagram and past issues to get a feel of the style of the zine and what we're trying to share. The zines are usually around 52 pages with the longest features being around 6 pages. (Bear this in mind if you've got 20 photos to upload! I might pick my favourites)
What happens if my submission is chosen?
If your submission is chosen I'll be in contact via CuratorSpace, and your submission will be marked as accepted. I'll ask for your postal address if you wish, which will be documented in a spreadsheet of contributors so that I can post out your free copy of the zine when it is released!
