Liverpool Book Art is curating a third major exhibition of Book Art in 2018. Following the great success of our 2016 ‘Shakespeare Now’ exhibition, we have decided to celebrate a significant literary anniversary by setting a key text as inspiration for 2018’s exhibition. Liverpool Book Art is now inviting submissions from artists who wish to participate. 2018 marks 200 years since the first edition of Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein or, The Modern Prometheus’ was published (on 1st January 1818). This anniversary is the catalyst for our 2018 exhibition.

Frankenstein is a classic work for a variety of reasons. Not only is it arguably the very first work of science fiction, but it is also a core text of Gothic literature (Dracula wasn’t published until nearly 80 years later!).

Its themes of ambition and hubris, ethics and morality, responsibility for the consequence of one’s actions, free will and empathy have been important since the book was first published. Today, they appear hugely relevant, whether considering genetic manipulation and synthetic biology, artificial intelligence and machine learning, or Silicon Valley’s ‘disruptive technologies’. This is reflected in a new edition published this year by MIT Press ‘annotated for scientists, engineers, and creators of all kinds’, as well as in recent television series such as Humans. We are therefore tremendously excited about the range of possibilities Frankenstein offers as an inspiration for book artists. We want the exhibition to celebrate excellence and creativity, and to increase interest and appreciation of artists’ books. While of course we won’t exclude depictions of Frankenstein’s ‘monster’, we would be greatly disappointed if the majority of submissions selected only such an exclusive focus!
This year there is a £10 submission fee: please see FAQs for details

Liverpool Book Art’s long-standing collaboration with Liverpool Central Library continues in 2018. The exhibition will open there in May in the magnificent Hornby room, and run until mid-August. For 2018, Liverpool Book Art is also working in partnership with the adjacent borough of Knowsley. Knowsley Council’s Kirkby Gallery will host the exhibition from September, and the Council (KMBC) is providing major support including marketing resources for this joint exhibition. KMBC and Liverpool Book Art will also be exploring touring the exhibition to other parts of the country.

Previous Liverpool Artists’ Book Exhibitions have been a great success, attracting international submissions of the highest quality, with works from Japan, Australia, Russia, USA, and across Europe and the UK. We are open to, and encourage, submissions from across the diverse range of book art.

What kind of proposals are you looking for?
We are tremendously excited about the range of possibilities Frankenstein offers as an inspiration for book artists. While of course we won’t exclude depictions of Frankenstein’s ‘monster’, we would be greatly disappointed if the majority of submissions selected only such an exclusive focus!
The initial selection will all need to be works which fit in the Liverpool Central Library display cabinets. The display options at Knowsley will offer different opportunities. Please note we expect to include multiple items by different artists within several of the display cases. The Liverpool display cabinets are of a variety of shapes and sizes:
• 1 case - 162.5cm (L) x 112.5cm (W) x 31cm (H)
• 8 cases - 92.5cm (L) x 52cm (W) x 31.5cm (H)
• 2 cases - 142.5cm (L) x 67cm (W) x 31cm (H)
• 1 tall case - 80.5cm (L) x 50.5 (W) x 70cm approx. (H)
• 1 vertical case - 148cm (W) x 37cm (Depth) Case contains one shelf. Height from base to shelf – 42cm approx., height from shelf to top 41cm approx. Depth of shelf 20cm approx.
Will the exhibition be the same in Liverpool and Knowsley?
We expect to select works with a view to them being exhibited in both Liverpool and Knowsley (and potentially touring thereafter), so artists should assume that works will be made available until at least the end of 2018.
At the same time, we want to attract prospective audiences to visit the exhibition in both Liverpool and Knowsley (not just one or the other). So we are open to refreshing the exhibition in Knowsley by adding new works. (We are also aware that not all artists will wish to loan their works for longer than 3 months; in addition, we want to provide the opportunity for works to sell e.g. at the end of the Liverpool
exhibition period) There may therefore be another Call for Artists to add to the exhibition when it moves from Liverpool to Knowsley.
Demonstrations, Workshops and Talks
We are keen to offer demonstrations, workshops, talks and performances during the course of the exhibition. One feature we are keen to explore is providing the opportunity for audiences to handle and read examples of book art e.g. by having reading copies or reading weekend(s). Please contact us with your ideas and proposals.
How do you decide on proposals?
Submissions will be selected by the Liverpool Book Art team and staff from Liverpool and Knowsley. We will select no more than two pieces from any individual artist in order to exhibit a wide range of work.
What are the selection criteria?
We want the exhibition to celebrate excellence and creativity, and to increase interest and appreciation of artists’ books. We are open to, and encourage, submissions from across the diverse range of book art.
What happens if my proposal is chosen?
The deadline for submissions is Tuesday 9th January. We will contact you within around 10 days of the deadline to let you know if your proposal has been accepted.
This early deadline recognises that most submissions will be proposals for works to be created, rather than already completed works. Delivery of all works is required by Sunday 15th April.
When is the delivery date?
Delivery of all works to Liverpool Central Library is required by Sunday 15th April. It is essential that all artists comply with this deadline. We can only design the exhibition once we have received all the works. All delivery and insurance costs to and from the Exhibition are the responsibility of the artists.
Are there payments to artists?
Not for the exhibition. Fees will be offered to artists for workshops and performances, while keeping participation free to the public.
Is there a private view / opening?
Yes. There will be opening events for the exhibition in both Liverpool and Knowsley, to which all participating artists will be invited. Dates to be confirmed.
What are the exhibition opening hours?
In Liverpool the Exhibition will be open during Liverpool Central Library opening hours (Mon-Fri 9am-8pm, Sat 9am-5pm and Sun 10am-5pm). Opening times for the Kirkby Gallery in Knowsley to follow. Entry to the public is free at both venues.
Does the location have disabled access?
Liverpool Central Library has excellent disabled access.
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
The Fair and Exhibition will be publicised via B.A.N.; our own website www.liverpoolbookart.com and Facebook page; printed flyers distributed locally and at other artist book fairs; a press campaign; and Visit Liverpool, Liverpool City Council and Central Library websites.
2018 will be a year of festivals and other events in Liverpool, marking 10 years since the city was European Capital of Culture. Regular events include Liverpool Biennial (14th July - 28th October); Liverpool International Music Festival (20th – 22nd July); International Festival of Business (12th – 28th June); and the Tall Ships (25th – 28th May).
We will maximise cross-promotion with the most relevant events, such as Liverpool Biennial.
Do I need to be present?
No
Is this a selling exhibition?
Yes, we are very happy to give artists the opportunity to sell their work. However, works do not have to be for sale.
