] G A Z E [ is a non-profit contemporary art space within a domestic setting providing a diverse platform for artistic experimentation and emerging interdisciplinary practices. We are seeking artists working in installation, film, sculpture and live art for our opening exhibition.

The fantasised gaze turns the subject into an object; the subject under the gaze is captured in the field of vision, inspiring a feeling of self-consciousness and alienation. The gaze as non-reciprocal; the fantasy of an invisible, external gaze is not always reassuring. To revisit the concept of the gaze, from Laura Mulvey’s original text, ‘Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema’  (1975), to address intersectional debates in feminism in light of social and political changes. To explore new ways of thinking about the pleasures and pains of looking and being looked at; by reassessing experiences of objectification and empowerment, draws attention to the intersectionality of the gaze. Capitalism revolves on an intricate network of gazes.

Art as the transformation of an act of making into a gesture of showing, destined for the gaze of the other; to submit to the scopic drive. The work of art functions by inviting fascination only in order to put an end to it, it satisfies the gaze only in order to bring about a separation from it; falling under the gaze is a prerequisite to separation from it. Art, reveals its own artifice.

We invite submissions exploring the concept of the intersectional gaze and the politics of spectatorship for the opening exhibition of ] G A Z E [ contemporary art space. Artists working in sculpture, installation, performance and film are welcome to apply with current or new work. We particularly welcome submissions from artists who are currently underrepresented in the contemporary art sector. We are keen to include the voices of artists which are not currently represented in this particular region.
