We’re looking for proposals for an upcoming show at the Glasgow Zine Library that question and expand upon the possibilities of fanfiction. How can the idea of rewriting the established truth be used in the current political climate? What does it mean to take collective ownership of a fictional universe? Could we apply these ideas to other areas of our lives?

Fanfiction allows us to rewrite narratives – over and over if necessary – moulding the characters, settings and stories into our own visions of how they should be. It allows us to delve deeper, flesh out minor characters, fill in plot holes, and reverse terrible decisions. It allows us to create protagonists that we recognise ourselves in. It can be deeply personal or an act of collective storytelling that re-establishes the canon through join force of imagination and will.

We’re looking for proposals for an upcoming show that question and expand upon the possibilities of fanfiction.

  • How can the idea of rewriting the established truth be used in the current political climate?
  • What does it mean to take collective ownership of a fictional universe?
  • Could we apply these ideas to other areas of our lives?

Proposals could be for an artwork, zine, talk/workshop, or a combination of the three.

About the Glasgow Zine Library

The Glasgow Zine Library is a community archive and library in the southside of Glasgow. Since opening in September 2018, Glasgow Zine Library has amassed a collection of over 1,000 zines, moved from our Gorbals location to Govanhill, and developed a year round programme for our community. It is a place for people to make, share, and do. Our annual festival (Glasgow Zine Fest) continues to take place every April at the Centre for Contemporary Arts, and welcomes over 2000 visitors to celebrate DIY culture.
