Due to support from Arts Council England, Long Division is running a Seed Fund Programme in 2018 to fund artists to create new work for the festival.

Long Division Festival 2018 will take place in Wakefield City Centre from June 1st until June 3rd. We will also be partnering with Wakefield Artwalk, which takes place on May 30th. We have successfully received Arts Council England funding to run a Seed Fund Programme, to commission new work by artists from the WF postcode, which will then be premiered / revealed at the festival in June.

We are looking for artists / creatives in all creative mediums with the exception of music. We will accept music if it is combined with one or more other artistic strands. The artistic mediums may include but are not limited to: Visual Arts, Photography, Film, Theatre, Spoken Word, The Written Word, Graphic Design, Installation, Exhibition, Digital / Game Design, Architecture, Sculpture.

The overall aim of the Seed Fund Programme is to create new, exciting, challenging work that reflects positively on Wakefield as a creative and engaging place.

The Seed Fund Programme falls under our project entitled “A Manifesto For A New Wakefield” and this is the theme we are looking for in the work. It does not need to be about Wakefield directly, but your work should have a proud Wakefield accent. What would a manifesto for the future look like in our city? What message would you add to it? You can reference the past and talk about where we are now but with an eye to the ideals of a New Wakefield.

As well as being performed / exhibited at the festival, we will be producing and distributing a printed document / book after the festival; the actual “Manifesto For A New Wakefield” which will include all Commissioned and Seed Funded works + other selected works. Your commission does not have to be suited to the printed page but a method of inclusion should be considered (this could be a script extract, photographs of the performance, stills from a film, actual artwork etc.)

For performances, we only expect one performance (unless you wish otherwise). For exhibitions there are options to exhibit across the festival and we will be able to assist / advise on locations if required.

You and your work will be part of Long Division’s evolution towards a festival that includes the wider arts and directly and effectively supports artists. Your work will be a proud part of our programme and will promote it alongside our national headliners and performers.

We are able to offer up to £250 for each commission via the Seed Fund Programme. This fee is to include all aspects of the commission, including creation and performance / display at the festival, and the artist’s own fee (s). However, it is likely that Long Division will be able to organise and cover any fees relating to the venue for the commission, unless there are very specific and unusual requirements. This will be tackled on a case by case basis.

Checklist:

  • You or the majority of the group applying reside in a WF postcode.
  • You will create a piece of work that can be performed or exhibited on at least one day of Long Division 2018.
  • Your work addresses the main theme of the Seed Fund Programme and can take place in Wakefield City Centre.

We are especially interested in work that:

  • Uses space in an interesting way. This could mean a type of work performed / exhibited where it is not usually found, or a completely fresh space to Long Division that will take audiences somewhere new.
  • Will be transferable in some means to our printed “Manifesto” collection.
