The Between Gallery began in 2022 as an online gallery space for artists to respond to pre-determined themes. As a platform for both emerging and established artists, The Between bridges the gap between the two and allows artists at any stage of their careers to respond, practise and challenge their creativity through diverse themes. This open call will culminate in an ONLINE exhibition. Therefore all artworks that are physical must be photographed and submitted, we will not accept actual artworks. Sandra L. Bem wrote in 1974 that “… in society at large, masculinity and femininity have long been conceptualized as bipolar ends of a single continuum…”. Today the lines between what is regarded as feminine and masculine are arguable, but in 1974 Bem decided to create a list of adjectives that form “Items on the Masculinity, Femininity, and Social Desirability Scales of the BSRI [Bem Sex-Role Inventory].

This open-call asks artists to respond to the adjective list by submitting artworks that challenge, affirm and rethink how we interpret their meanings. Works could include: painting, drawing, sketches/works-in-progress, digital images, video, written/spoken word, poetry, etc.

As there are 60 adjectives in total, The Between Gallery have decided to ask for submissions in the 1974 categories of: Masculine items, Feminine items and Neutral items.
