OPEN CALL for artists & writers — HAUS-A-REST ZINE Theme: Foraging / Nature as Art Practice issue 69
Deadline: 05/03/2026Jenna Fox
HAUS-A-REST is inviting submissions for an upcoming zine exploring foraging and nature as creative practice. We are interested in work that approaches nature not as subject matter alone, but as process, collaborator, material, method or way of thinking. This might include literal foraging, ecological research, walking as practice, material gathering, plant knowledge, fermentation, fibre, ritual, landscape, seasonality, care, slowness, or embodied engagement with the natural world. We welcome both visual art and written work.
OPEN CALL — HAUS-A-REST ZINE 🌱
For centuries, women have been connected to the earth through rituals of foraging, care, and making — gathering plants for food, medicine, beauty, and ceremony. These practices were forms of embodied knowledge and creative expression, shaped by season, land, and intuition.
Today, artists are returning to these ways of working: walking the land, gathering materials, fermenting, weaving, and making with nature as collaborator rather than resource. Foraging becomes ritual, resistance, and art practice.
We’re inviting visual art and written work exploring foraging / nature as art practice — from process-led work and ecological research to poetry, material practice, and documentation.
Across continents, artists approach nature in diverse yet conceptually related ways. For example, interdisciplinary artist Lora Aziz reimagines cross-cultural relationships with land and ecology through wildcrafting, workshops and visual ethnobotany, integrating foraging and plant knowledge into poetic installations and community engagement.
While land and environmental art historically emerged with the Earthworks movement of the 1960s–70s, many contemporary practices expand these ideas into ecological care, materials research, and embodied knowledge. Artists like Agnes Denes have used large-scale ecological projects—such as planting fields—to reframe art as both environmental intervention and social critique.
What links this diverse body of work is an orientation toward process, place, materiality, and reciprocity. Whether through walking, collecting, arranging, fermenting, or weaving, these artists invite us to reconsider art as something that happens with nature, not simply about it.
The focus of this open call is not just on finished outcomes, but on the relationships, methods and questions that emerge when artistic practice and the natural world intersect. We are interested in work that reflects ecological thinking, material awareness, and creative responses to foraging, land, and nature as active collaborators in making.
We welcome both visual art and written work, including but not limited to:
Photography
Drawing / illustration
Sculpture or material-based work
Documentation of process
Poetry
Short essays or reflections
Experimental or hybrid texts
Submissions can be polished or process-led. We’re interested in how you work, not just what you make. This is a space for gentle inquiry, experimentation, and personal or political relationships with land, plants, and ecology.
Selected works will be featured on the HAUS-A-REST zine gallery and shared across our social media platforms.
