We, SamOne SamTwo - an artist-duo based in Leeds, want to bring together artists that identify as queer (LGBTQIA+), who are based in Leeds and surrounding areas, to contemplate and create collectively without any thematic bounds. This is a residency+exhibition (5th Nov - 5th Dec) that is punctuated by social events and an exhibition.

Collaborating as a queer artist duo since March has made us question making work under a shared identity, as opposed to aesthetic/conceptual motive, given the multiplicity of our realities. With this project we want to challenge/test the validity of making as this particular group.

The project/loose residency will run for five weeks (5th Nov - 5th Dec) in a temporary East Street Arts space in central Leeds. The three floored retail unit will operate as a space for practise-based work, research/sharing, meetings and public events. The aim of the first week is for us to introduce our practises to each other (including the public if people wish) and to organise the opening event. Each artist introduces their work by inviting people to actually ‘do it’, so no powerpoint presentations. This can be a space for testing ideas, critique and cross fertilisation - which will inform/invigorate the collective making process throughout.

The opening event will take place on the Friday (9th Nov), the form is unknown. The next two weeks will be spent making work in the space with an opening party on 23rd November. We’re inspired by event-based projects like Erin Manning’s SenseLab, that are created through collective self-organisation. The SenseLab’s “product is its process, which is meant to disseminate. The measure of success is the creative momentum that spins off into individual and group practices elsewhere, to seed new processes asserting their own autonomy.” Similarly we see art as enacting a concept as opposed to illustrating it, enacting it through interactions/collaboration - that ultimately requires trust/empathy; which are scarce today.

The final week will be dedicated to public events that will exist within the work created and welcome performance/discussion, followed by a period of de-installation and group reflection. Hopefully this project will lead to radically new ways of making/thinking about art, activism and our relation to one another/self in a collective practise. Working intensely with local artists strengthens the artist community here. Ecology of the community requires not just making work but a commitment to the creation of spaces for making/reflection/critique/celebration/collaboration.
