The Sussex Portrait Artist of the Year competition, formerly The Worthing Portrait Artist of the Year, is on the hunt for the best portrait painter in Sussex—could it be you?

Submissions are open for your chance to test your skills against 9 other artists in front of a live audience on the 22nd March 2025, in the grade two listed building, The Venue, in Worthing, with celebrity sitters, guest judges & a whole lot of fantastic prizes, including the title of Sussex Portrait Artist of the Year

Our open call has started and will run until 1st Oct 

In order to apply for this opportunity, please follow the steps below.

- Confirm you are a Sussex based resident (we may ask for proof of this if selected as a finalist)

- Submit one image of a portrait painted by you (this must have been painted within the last 3 years and demonstrate a style similar to what you could replicate in a live painting final)

- Pay the submission fee of £10

Key dates:

- Submissions close on 1st October 2024

- All entries will be judged by our panel of experts, and successful finalists will be notified in early December 2024

- The live painting final will consist of 9 finalists, painting 1 of 3 celebrity sitters over 4 hours. 

The final will be ticketed and open to the public. The approximate event timings will be 12 pm—6 pm on Saturday, 22nd March 2025, with the winner/runners-up announced towards the latter part of the event.

- There will be a chance to display and sell your submitted artwork.

- Artists must be comfortable painting in a live setting. Phones and tablets will be permitted to capture reference photos of the sitters.

- If you are unable to attend the event, we request that you let us know asap (no later than 48 hours before) so that we can replace you with a reserve artist.

The following submission fees apply to this opportunity.

  • Submission for the Sussex Portrait Artist of the year competition - 10.00 GBP

The appropriate fee will be payable using a debit or credit card after the first submission has been completed. If the submission fee allows you to submit more than once, you will be able to make further submissions after the first. Who is eligible for this opportunity?
Any Sussex-based artist over the age of 18.
When is the deadline?
Tuesday 1st October.
How many works can I submit?
1 piece per submission.
When is the delivery date?
Artist will need to be available for the day on Saturday 22nd March 2025 for the live painting event. We encourage artists to bring the piece they submitted for display throughout the competition.
When do I need to collect my work?
Close of competition day on Saturday 22nd March 2025.
How much does it cost?
£10 per submission.
Are there payments to artists?
There will be cash prizes and the chance to win artist materials/experiences for those judged to have the best portraits.

Artists will also be allowed to sell their painting on the day.
Is there a private view / opening?
No. This is a single day event.
What are the exhibition opening hours?
Approximately 12 pm-6 pm on Saturday 22nd March 2025.
Does the location have disabled access?
Yes.
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
Social media campaign on Instagram and Facebook. Print media campaign in local press and prominent poster/flyer placement in local venues.
Do I need to be present?
Yes. All chosen finalists will need to be present to paint on the day.
How do you decide on proposals?
Judges will base their decision on technical skill, flair and ability to capture the likeness of the sitter.
What happens if my proposal is chosen?
If your artwork is chosen you will be contacted in December. Further details will follow as to the details of the event but you must be available to paint on the day in front of a live audience.
What are the selection criteria?
Judges will base their decision on technical skill, flair and ability to capture the likeness of the sitter. All artists must be Sussex based and over 18.
