Working in partnership, The Auckland Project and Northern Heartlands are seeking an artist or arts organisation to create a spectacular event to mark the opening of the redeveloped AUCKLAND CASTLE in the summer of 2019. The event will involve representatives from all sectors of the local community and have a strong element of community engagement, particularly for those who are disadvantaged.

At this stage we are seeking ideas and associated costs which will form the basis of funding applications in the autumn of 2018, with shortlisting and appointment of the selected artists early in 2019. Costs should include all aspects of production including any outreach workshops in the community and technical and associated event costs for the final event.

The event itself is expected to take place in the environs of the Castle during the opening phase but it may involve processional elements which lead audiences from the town of Bishop Auckland into the Castle grounds. It is also anticipated that the opening event would have a legacy involving participatory arts for the visitors during the summer holidays with a finale on August Bank Holiday.

Any proposal should indicate how the event will link with the history and heritage of the Castle (900 year-old former residence of the Bishop of Durham) and the significant role it has played in Bishop Auckland; in County Durham; and across the wider North East region.

The event should also be forward looking and inspire hope and optimism for the future. As the budget is not fixed and we will be applying for funding for this from Arts Council England we want applications that are high quality and ambitious.
