The Experimental Studio residencies, established in 2014, offer contemporary artists working in any discipline to benefit from the opportunity of working for a concentrated period of time, supported by a communal environment, including the ongoing exhibition and events programme in the gallery and the opportunity to interact on both a formal and informal basis with other artists elsewhere in the studio and gallery centre, Bamburgh House.

Based at Abject Gallery in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, The Experimental Studio is a paid opportunity consisting of a 3 week in-gallery residency to create new work, culminating in a 2 week exhibition.

The fourth round residency will take place between July and August 2017.

Residencies are open to artists in any field of practice. There are no restrictions in terms of age or nationality of artists, although applicants should note that this is a non-residential opportunity and any required accommodation must be arranged by the artist. Normal studio access times are Monday-Sunday 8am-11pm.

The residency will include

  • Artists’ bursary of £1000 for exhibition ready work.
  • 3 week use for Abject 2 Gallery for studio space.
  • 2 week exhibition in Abject 2 Gallery.
  • Use of facilities and equipment in Bamburgh House.
  • Opportunity to work among and exhibit along with other contemporary artists.

Application will be assessed against the following criteria

  • Concept and project potential.
  • Relevant experience of artist.
  • Possibility of completing proposal within the required timeframe.

Timeline

  • Application deadline – To reach by 31/03/2017.
  • Artists will be informed of the results of selection on 14/04/2017.
  • 3 week studio residency period between July and August 2017 (exact dates negotiable).
  • 2 week exhibition in August 2017.

How much does it cost?
There is no application fee.
Are there payments to artists?
There is a bursary of £1000 to cover fee and materials.
Is there a brief for the work?
No. The only requirement for residency is to create suitable work for a 2 week exhibition.
Do I need to be present?
Yes. The residency is venue based but there is no requirement to be present at specific hours.
Is there a private view / opening?
Yes. Date of preview for exhibition to be decided upon in conjunction with the artist.
What are the selection criteria?
Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

Concept and project potential.
Relevant experience of artist.
Possibility of completing proposal within the required time-frame.
Does the location have disabled access?
Yes. The residency takes place on the second floor to which there is lift access. A disabled toilet is also available.
