Professional Visual Arts Studios available artists working in all mediums

Setting up your visual art practice in one of ANCA's purpose built studios gives you access to well desgined studios, spacious gardens, a diverse community of studio artists and ANCA Gallery's exhibition program. ANCA studios are afforable and professional. ANCA minimises rental fees to maximise your time in the studio. Each studio is a blank slate which includes a sink, lighting, high ceilings and concrete floor, for your to customise to your unique visual arts practice. These studios have professional artists in mind:

  • 24 hour access all year round,
  • long-term, 3 year leases,
  • studios from 32 to 100 square metres
  • roller door or double door access
  • free parking, and
  • a community of over 40 committed artists surround you.

As an ANCA studio artist, you are a vital member of this artist-run-space. ANCA has a highly respected profile within the Canberra arts community. ANCA studio artists contribute to the ANCA board and specialised committees, care for the purpose built studios and gardens and open up to the public for our popular annual Open Studios.

Professional visual artists, working and living in the Canberra region.
Is there a deadline?
No, ANCA accepts studio applications year round.
If my application is accepted, how long until I get to move in?
Once accepted, your name will go on ANCA's waiting list. On average applicants wait between 3 and 6 months for a studio.
How much rent do you charge?
Rental fees start at $270 per month and is based on the size of the studio.
Can I share a studio?
Yes, please let us know in your application if you would like to share a studio. If you already have an artist in mind to share with, please have them submit an application as well.
Can I make any alterations to the studio?
Yes, any alterations must be approved by the ANCA board. When vacating the studio alterations must be removed and the space left in original condition. Alterations can include, but are not limited to, false walls or floors, painting, installing kilns or exhaust systems and built in storage systems.
What is a financial referee report?
The financial referee report submitted with your application can be from an employer, landlord, mortgage lender etc. It must demonstrate that you have the capacity to make timely rental payments.

What is a professional referee report?
The professional referee report should be written by an arts professional that you have worked with. It should attest to your professionalism and commitment to your arts practice.
Does the location have disabled access?
Yes, all studios are on a single level, however only studios at ANCA Dickson have access to the disabled toilet.
How do you decide on applications?
Each application is assessed by ANCA's New Tenants Committee. The committee is comprised of current studio artists at ANCA. Once your written application has been assessed, you will be asked to attend an informal interview with the committee. The interview questions will elaborate on the 7 selection criteria listed in the written application. This is also an opportunity to ask any of your own questions about the studios.
What happens if my application is approved?
If there are not suitable studios available, you will be placed on the waiting list. Once a suitable studio becomes vacant, ANCA will make you studio offer. If the studio or timing isn't right, it's ok to decline as ANCA will make 2 more offers before asking you to reapply.
Can I bring pets to the studio?
As the studios are in a communal space, all pets must be well trained and the owner must be present and responsible for them at all times. If the pet causes any trouble, you will be asked to leave your pet at home.
I know ANCA is an Artist Run Space, what level of participation does this involve?
ANCA is looking for self-motivated members who will attend and participate tenants meetings (about 6 a year), carry out cleaning and gardening duties (about 8 hours a year), attend working bees (twice a year), regularly check and reply to emails from the administration (weekly), acknowledge ANCA in you social media posts and exhibitions and help organise/open your studio for the annual ANCA Open Day.
You are also required to join a specialised committee for at least one year within your first 3 - year tenancy.
