Wilderness Commons is an exhibition exploring alternative ecologies, rituals and the evolving relationship between humanity and nature, envisioning flora, fauna, and landscapes as living beings.

Ritual and nature have been deeply interconnected throughout history, reflecting the profound relationship between human societies and their natural environments. From Seasonal celebrations to harvest festivals, animism and healing practices in various cultures, rituals were integral to expressing reverence, gratitude, and a sense of interconnectedness with the natural world.

This exhibition explores what a modern ritual can look like and what alternative ways of engagement there are. This shift in our approach holds the potential to deepen our connection with the environment, fostering a symbiotic relationship that transcends conventional notions of nature as a passive backdrop.

Through a diverse array of artistic expressions and public programming, this exhibition aims to inspire and nurture ideas about exchanges and dialogues between humanity and the environment.

We are looking for work that explores:

How might we create a new ritual for our changing world?

How can we feel more connected with the rest of the living world?

How can a deeper understanding of the living world be encouraged through rituals, dialogues or other practices?

All media is accepted, and anyone can apply.

It is free to apply; however, if selected, we ask Artists for a £22 contribution (like crowdfunding) and/or to volunteer some time to invigilate the exhibition.

The festival is set in the vibrant city of Bath and attracts lots of people every year. It is a great chance for early career artists to experiment, gain experience, and network.

Wilderness Commons is a part of Fringe Arts Bath, a festival that takes over empty and unexpected spaces across Bath City and beyond with an annual festival of contemporary visual arts, performance and intervention.

Fringe Arts Bath (FaB) Festival provides a platform for early-career and emerging Curators & Artists to test ideas beyond the gallery-based arts scene. There are 17 other exhibition call-outs forming the FaB Festival programme, coming to Bath, UK, from 24th May to 9th June 2024.
