Yorkshire Sculpture International (YSI) and Corridor8 are looking for a critical/creative writer to take an active part in the festival's engagement programme. The selected writer will work with YSI’s Engagement Curator within school and community group settings across Leeds and Wakefield, and contribute to a collaborative publication. At the core of the engagement programme is the concept of ‘material literacy’, an idea which aims to create the space and conditions for people of all ages to explore sculpture-making; reconnecting them with the array of materials and processes used in sculpture today. The selected writer will be supported to work with people to explore this idea of non-verbal and haptic learning, creating a piece of writing that responds to these ideas and their first-hand experience of connecting with the engagement programme.

The writer will be fully supported by YSI and Corridor8 staff and receive mentoring from an established writer to evolve a piece of writing up to 2,500 words. They will work with editors at Corridor8 and contribute to the design and development a bespoke online publication to feature the piece - launching in September 2019.

The successful applicant will be based in the North of England and be enthusiastic about working in collaboration with a wide range of people and be willing to travel around the region (on public transport, no driving required).

We are looking for passionate applications, including those from applicants who want to try something new and who have not had similar opportunities in the past. We want to know how this residency opportunity and mentoring would enable your creative professional development as well as the direction of your creative writing practice.

We welcome applications from a range of backgrounds and experiences. Applications from individuals are encouraged regardless of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief and marriage and civil partnerships.

Fee: £1,500 inclusive of travel and subsistence expenses (an allocation of 10 days at £150pd).

Residency time frame: April – September 2019. The allocation of hours are flexible but we hope applicants are available for an initial meeting on Thursday 18 April (9:30 - 11:30 at the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds).

The selection panel is comprised of members of Corridor8 and YSI teams, and an external artist. Applicants will be contacted soon after the deadline and asked to fill out an equal opportunities monitoring form, and will be notified of the panel’s decision by Friday 5 April.
