CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #18: Charlotte Cullen

Charlotte Cullen is an artist, exhibiting both nationally and internationally. Their work is held in private collections across the UK and Europe and they are also a member of the Sculpture Network with Yorkshire Sculpture International.

"My new body of work combines my techniques of woven metal and plasma cutting with explorations into stained glass methods. This new direction was inspired by my recent residency at LUTRA print workshop in Leeds, where I developed a new approach to the relationship between the mark and the material object.

The working title for this project is 'She is the Arrow', inspired by street shrines in Italy, which are reminiscent of the murals I encountered during my childhood visits to Northern Ireland. While marked by religious iconography, these places of deity and worship create a space to congregate around grief; to gather and rebuild. This cultural communion to sit with grief is what I hope to unpick in these new works.

The sculptures will be multi-layered and wall-based, with space for flowers and candles. This will allow me to incorporate the installation aspect of my practice into my sculptures and create a more immersive experience for the viewer.

This direction has been supported by my recent residency at LUTRA print workshop in Leeds, where I developed a new approach to the relationship between the mark and the material object. This project marks an ambition for me to develop my practice mindfully and to work with galleries and organisations which offer meaningful support as I return to my practice after a period of grief."
