CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #14: Naroa Pérez

Naroa Pérez is a photographer researching the sense of touch, nostalgia, pain, and fear. Her practice focuses on the darkroom and its craft, celebrating procedural concepts such as error, chance, and repetition. She uses E6 slides, liquid emulsion, and colour printing. Her work is already in the library of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, in the rare book collection of the Bodleian Library in Weston, Oxford. She graduated with a BA in Photography from the London College of Communication (UAL) in 2017.

"I have been working as a photographer since 2002, but recently my photographic artwork is moving towards sculptural objects.These have included printing onto Japanese papers and fabric and backlighting them. The fabric pieces were also constricted as cushions. This project is called Trail of Touch: Tactile Nostalgia and includes academic research exploring the sense of touch, using the liquid emulsion technique to print on fibre-based and porous materials.

My aim is to develop this project further by incorporating porcelain slipcasting into my repertoire in order to make fragile ceramic objects. These objects will explore ideas of vunerability and resilience by printing images of skin onto the porcelain surface, incorporating freckles, scars, wrinkles, hair, pores, and folds."
