CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #15: Pamela Schilderman

Pamela Schilderman's mixed-media practice is influenced by science and often draws inspiration from her Dutch/Brazilian heritage. Through her work, she aims to encourage the viewer to question knowledge and value systems. Since graduating from Goldsmiths in 2004 she has exhibited in galleries, museums and alternative venues across the UK and completed residencies in France, Holland and Finland.

"My project 'EcologyNOW' will be a hybrid museum intervention exploring links between human Forensics and animal species to challenge the position of humans at the top of the classic evolution chain. It is the result of a three-way Sci/Art collaboration already underway, between University of Birmingham plastics scientists, the Lapworth Museum and myself.

The installation will consist of sculptures, drawings, a zine and a digital ecosystem game, merging the aesthetic of Victorian curiosities with both conventional media (glass, wax, metal) and unconventional media (human saliva, hair, fingernails). The zine will employ a mix of drawing, collage and printmaking to creatively highlight UOB scientific research into plastic pollution and will be sold for animal charity 'people’s trust for endangered species'.

The digital ecosystem game will be designed to act as a legacy by going online after the tour. It will illustrate the impact of the extinction of an animal species on the ecosystem as a whole. Deliberately provocative, the project aims to highlight the need for conservation. It is expected to tour nationally with Warrington Museum & Art Gallery (6th July - 24th September 2023) already confirmed and negotiations underway with other venues, including Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre (3rd March - 24th June 2023).
