CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #4: Carly Seller

The second of our two bursary recipients is Carly Seller, a multi-disciplinary artist whose work spans photography, moving-image, textiles and performance. Playing with control and interruption through process-led practices, she studies the intertwining relationships between the body, breath and landscape, drawing on her own yoga practice.

Her new work will expand on her existing research into sculptural textiles, but also develop a shift into metalwork, incorporating sound and performance. Through exploring brass singing bowls as a meditative object, she will explore the bowl not only as an instrument, but also as a receptacle – considering the relationship between the body and the bowl.

The bursary will enable her to work with a blacksmith in order to learn new skills and fabricate the pieces. After making the work, she will develop a performance piece to be shown at an event co-hosted by CAMP (Contemporary Art Membership Plymouth, www.camp-plymouth.org).

Her previous experience includes showing her work nationally at exhibitions such as the Jerwood Drawing Prize (2017), Plymouth Contemporary (2017), and Exeter Phoenix’s Gallery333 (2018). She has also co-produced work with other artists, including 'Sound Observations' with Lee Jackson, which was launched at Plymouth Art Weekender (2017).
