CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #14: Emilia Copeland

Emilia Copeland is a queer actor, model, and filmmaker. Emilia's acting work has screened internationally, including at Cannes, Berlinale, and BFI Flare Festival, as well as on BBC One and BBC America. Following on from directing amateur theatre, she is passionate about developing projects in factual entertainment and dramatic fiction for the screen.

"Peace of Cake is a short film, shot entirely on iPhone, that explores how cake baking can be used as a meditative practice to cope with debilitating symptoms of anxiety and PTSD. This is important to me as I am a PTSD sufferer myself and I am eager to share my story in a creative manner.

This project was created solely by me as part of the E.D.E.N Digital scheme for LGBTQ+ filmmakers, in which we received lottery-funded training to teach us how to take filmmaking solely into our own hands, using items at our immediate disposal rather than relying on expensive equipment rentals and hiring large crews. It proved to be a very empowering learning experience to shoot a film on my phone, and I am very excited to share my personal and creative exploratory practice with audiences.

I'm aiming to submit Peace of Cake to food-themed and mental health awareness film festivals, as well as ones targeted towards female and LGBTQ+ creators. I will also share the film among my international industry communities, including Women in Film and Television in the UK, Toronto, and the International branch, and the Wellness branch of the Firecracker Department."
