CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #21: Iram Iqbal
Iram Iqbal is an Islamic artist who creates both traditional and contemporary art. Using Arabic Calligraphy, Islamic architecture, and other symbolic imagery, she uses her art to show the beauty of Islam and address the many misconceptions about it.
"My current project explores the many achievements of Muslim women and the struggles that they face related to wearing the hijaab or veil without fear of inciting controversy. As a Muslim woman who wears the hijaab, it is important to highlight the injustices that women are facing in countries that are banning the wearing of hijaabs in schools and colleges. I believe that if it is wrong to force women to wear the hijaab, then it is wrong to force them to take it off too. This bursary will enable me to experiment with different materials and techniques and create my paintings of hijaabi women at a larger scale."
