CuratorSpace Artist Bursary #19: Japhet Dinganga

Japhet Dinganga is a Birmingham-based visual artist and DT technician, mainly working in installation.

"My practice is influenced by the everyday notion of being and becoming. I’m intrigued by ideas surrounding metaphysics and ontology, as a sense of observation and depicting the relationship between man and the material world. Found objects and materials show evidence of cultures, habits and social understanding. My work is an exploration of these indications and ideas, but it is always open to audience interpretation.

I’m most inspired by artists such as Joseph Cornell, Noah Purifoy, Anselm Kiefer and Christo and Jeanne Claude for the sense of place and community in their work. I am interested in making this relevant to the context of the Midlands by creating interventions in disused spaces that make up the local landscape, to consider how these spaces could be used better, and more beneficially for the local communities.

I am currently teaching myself how to build furniture to make functional work alongside my installations. Found domestic items have always been crucial to my installation and conceptually I’m always drawn to contrasting the use of domestic material to current social patterns. My aim is to explore the junction between art, craft, and design. Driven by form’s ability to disrupt a space, my objects are realised through traditional explorations of material, and grounded in conceptual meaning."
