CuratorSpace Salon #7: Creative Mothers Project

Our second professional development event this November will take place on Saturday 17th November 2-4pm at HEART in Headingley and is co-curated by the Creative Mothers Project. These events give you the chance to hear from creative professionals about the work they do and how they can help you to develop your own practice. You’ll also have the chance to have a drink and meet other people working in the creative industries.

This event focuses on the inclusivity and visibility of mothers in the art world, and how we are able to make studio provision more accessible. Alongside CuratorSpace we are hosting Dyana Gravina from the Procreate Project in London, who has been at the forefront of addressing these issues.

The Venue

HEART is the arts, enterprise and community centre in the middle of Headingley run by the community for the community.  HEART exists thanks to the efforts of Headingley Development Trust that worked hard to keep this old primary school in community use. At the heart of Headingley, they offer a versatile venue to hire, a spacious shared workspace and a varied programme of events and classes.

The Creative Mothers Project

The Creative Mothers Project are a grassroots project in Leeds, bringing mothers and children together in creative sessions, sharing parenting, creativity and exploring what it means to be a Mother Artist.

Together we support each other to continue to work creatively whilst inspiring and caring for our children. Our mission is to provide a safe, welcoming and practical environment — where mothers and pregnant women can continue with their creative practice and in turn retain financial and emotional independence free from isolation.

Aire Place Studios support our members to benefit from well-equipped co-working spaces, shared childcare, exhibition space, networking and creative development opportunities. We’ll provide practical, creative, business and emotional support for one another as we balance both work and motherhood.

Procreate Project

Procreate Project is a pioneering arts organisation supporting the development of contemporary artists who are mothers working across art forms.

Working towards equal representation and opportunities for women and mothers, today Procreate Project offers online and offline platforms and opportunities for the display, screen and staging of works, connections with peers and organisations that can support artist mothers at different stages of their career.

Through building communities, and starting studios that have integrated childcare, they are exploring new ways to foster creative development and healthier communities.

Dyana Gravina (Creative Director and founder of Procreate Project) has run 3 pilot projects of the Mother House studio model, integrating childcare within art studios in Stroud and London, and is in the process of setting up a permanent art studio in London alongside a tool Kit that will enable mothers to continuing working while nurturing engaged parenting and replicate the model elsewhere. She joins us today to talk about the work they are doing.
