Maureen Nathan: Covid Covers

Originally from the west coast of Canada, Maureen Nathan is now based between London and Dorset. Her work has been shown with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Wells Art Contemporary, and the Royal West of England Academy Open Exhibitions. Compelled by character and atmosphere, she embraces the details, leaving traces or texture under the paint, ink or paper like a memory trail.

"Covid Covers began as an exercise in drawing my friend on a socially distanced visit that required us to wear masks. Moved by the power of the eyes to reveal character and personality, I began drawing friends and family when masked. The only parameter was the size and medium with each portrait being on A4 paper drawn with ink using a bamboo chopstick.

A selection of these portraits will be included in an exhibition with the Lots Road Group, an association of portrait artists. The exhibition is a biannual event and this year is titled 'Beyond the Door', in relation to lockdown and the pandemic. It opens on 9th November 2020 at Waterstones, Gower Street in London."

You can see a selection of Maureen's current portraits on her website.

CuratorSpace are currently featuring articles by artists, curators and organisations who want to share their experiences of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, whether that is artists using their practice as a way of exploring new boundaries of isolation, or as a way to connect more broadly with their communities. We are also interested in hearing from curators and organisations who are offering support to artists and audiences during this time.
