Sandra Beccarelli: Restless States

Sandra Beccarelli is an artist whose work explores change, transformation and movement from the known to the unknown and playing around with what is the true surface of things. Her working methods during Covid have pushed the idea of the surface even further, as she reflects on her previous works "One Hundred Thousand Surfaces" And "This Could All be Gone Tomorrow".

“My working methods and materials pursue ideas of the surface in a physical way by breaking down and refixing the surfaces of paintings. I drill and fill holes, I break and attempt to mend, I create a system then throw it out the window, so what was 'known’ or ' tangible' one day has vanished the next.

Luckily I have a studio at home in London, so I can continue to work from there, and since being in lockdown I have painted over, reworked, smashed up and drilled through previous works which were around me. I have decided not to buy new materials, but just to work with what I already have. I have found discarded bed frames and am using them as stretcher bars.

Neglected and forgotten materials and unfinished works get a second chance. My studio has become my new environment and ongoing installation where nothing is in the same place as the day before. I am also keeping a Covid diary of random thoughts and daily musings alongside my practical work to show both sides of what is happening. As usual, the creative and everyday are a part of our lives, except this is a very strange 'everyday’!”

We are also interested in hearing from curators and organisations who are offering support to artists.
