Angela Durkin is a mixed media artist based in the north west of England. Drawing inspiration from what’s around her, her practice includes a range of media including paint, collage, monoprint and paper cuts.
Through her practice, Angela uncovers viewpoints of everyday, exploring how, individually and collectively, we perceive and use places. By looking at repeated routes, journeys and views experienced over time and by closer observation of places often passed by she seeks her personal and truthful reflection on the place. She is particularly drawn to the post-industrial landscapes of the north west, its coastline and canal network and layers of history and stories of people, place and time. Her work begins with a walk, journey or visit. Recording with photos, drawings, frottage and foraged/ found objects then continuing in her studio, she explores materials, colour and texture through her mixed media work, including a range of techniques such as painting, collage, monoprint and paper cuts. Through these processes she seeks to explore the interplay between the natural and constructed elements of these landscapes, considering how the towns and cities of the north west have formed and how our experience of the landscape changes over time. She hopes her work invites a natural curiosity in places and encourages the viewer to stop and look anew at things they pass by each day.
