Angelika Addison is a painter and maker of artists' books based in the North East of Scotland. Her practice explores memory, family histories and inherited archives through painting, artists' books and mixed media, drawing on photographs, handwritten notes and found materials.

My practice explores how personal and family histories are held, altered and transmitted through photographs, handwritten notes and inherited books. Working primarily in oil paint, alongside artists' books and mixed media, I investigate memory as something fragmentary, uncertain and open to interpretation. Drawing on family archives, I work from found photographs whose subjects and histories are often only partially known. My long-standing engagement with observational drawing and painting informs the way I approach the figure, bringing attention to gesture, presence and materiality. Rather than reconstructing a clear narrative, my paintings focus on the ambiguity of remembrance, where identities remain unresolved and meaning shifts over time. Moving between observation and construction, I use painting and book-making to explore presence and absence, material traces and the ways in which fragments of the past continue to shape contemporary experience.
