Bethany Hughes Warwickshire, United Kingdom
Counted thread embroidery designer with over 20 years experience in both 2D and 3D pieces, inspired by historic gardens and textiles and the English countryside. Selected for Royal Academy 2024 Sumer Exhibition. Experienced public speaker and event host.
Bethany works with cotton thread on linen, using traditional stitching and construction techniques. She has created an imaginary country estate set in southern England, portraying each garden of the estate in samplers and linked small needlework accessories such as boxes and etuis, developing objects that are both decorative and practical for everyday use. Having studied both landscape architecture and classical studies, Bethany is fascinated by historical cultural exchange and the interpretation of existing places and stories. Her designs are sold to embroiderers across the world and she has spoken to a diverse range of audiences, from local art groups to students at the San Francisco School of Needlework and Design and over 200 stitchers at a UK stitching retreat.
