My inspiration comes from the landscape wherever I am. My paintings are not necessarily exact representations of a particular view but, more about the essence of the landscapes that I see. Most important to me are the memories evoked by a particular location; the light, atmosphere, colours and textures, weather conditions
I work with a range of different acrylics - paints and inks, soft and oil pastels, unique self produced collage, then adding various ‘found’ materials to bring texture to my work. I like to be experimental with techniques, this helps me keep the passion for painting and pushing me to develop my style. It's really exciting when after trying something different, a serendipitous effect gives me a new tool to add to my repertoire of techniques. This experimentation also extends to the tools I use to apply paint. I strive to create an element of abstraction to my painting style whilst still maintaining the feel of a Landscape. Heavy weight Watercolour Paper, Canvas boards and Wooden cradled panels are my favourite supports to work on. Luckily I have a studio close to my home , so my commute is very short, allowing me to paint whenever I wish and for as much or little time as I need. I am always happy to share my working practice with others, so to this end I run studio sessions for individuals or small groups to join me to observe and ask questions about my working practice. El duende is a Spanish term for the spirit of evocation. It comes from inside as a physical/emotional response. It’s what gives you chills, what makes you feel as you respond to a performance or work of art. A more loose translation means having soul, a heightened state of emotion, expression and authenticity. This is what I seek to incorporate in my paintings.
