  Back to profiles

David Faulkner is a U.S.-based digital artist blending traditional painting and digital collage techniques to explore narrative and abstraction. Formerly a global design leader for brands like Bose and Gap Inc, he returned to art full-time in 2024, creating layered, museum-quality prints that spark imagination and make fine art more accessible.

My work explores the ways memory, perception, and narrative shape our understanding of the world around us. Whether the subject is political conflict, an anonymous figure caught in contemplation, a landscape stripped to its essentials, or the dreamlike logic of a half-remembered moment, each piece begins as an inquiry into how experience accumulates—layered, fractured, and often unresolved.

I work primarily in digital media, using a process rooted in transformation and improvisation. A piece may originate as a photograph, a loose sketch, or a texture that catches my attention, but it evolves through extensive layering, blending, and reimagining. This method draws on my background in painting and architecture, where tracing paper, material studies, and iterative mark-making were central tools. Much like those architectural layers, my images accumulate history. They carry traces—eroded surfaces, graffiti-like marks, sharpened silhouettes, or disrupted geometries—that function as visual memory.

I’m drawn to moments of tension: the pressure between dominance and vulnerability, the friction at a crossroads, the split-second when identity feels unstable, or the emotional charge of a dream pressing into waking consciousness. Across subjects and styles, my intention is not to offer fixed interpretations but to create openings for viewers to project their own histories, anxieties, and imaginations. The work often stops short of resolution, reflecting the truth that understanding—of self, place, or society—is almost always provisional.

Ultimately, my practice is an exploration of how meaning emerges through layers: of color, of texture, of personal and cultural history. Each image asks the viewer to enter a moment in motion and complete the story on their own terms.
