Dora Williams London, United Kingdom
London-based artist Dora Williams works across abstract and figurative painting, using layered surfaces, restrained colour and partial erasure to explore presence, memory and inner states. Figures, landscapes and symbolic forms emerge and recede, inviting a personal, emotional response.
I am a painter working between abstraction and figuration. My paintings develop through layering, erasure and repeated changes, allowing figures, landscapes and other forms to emerge gradually from the surface rather than being fully described. I use restrained colour, gestural marks and shifting edges to create a sense of atmosphere and ambiguity. My work is rooted in memory, emotion and inner states, and I am interested in how a painted image can suggest presence without fixing a single narrative. Whether I am working with the figure, landscape or another motif, I am less interested in depicting the subject literally than in using it as a way to explore feeling, connection and the space between what is visible and what remains unresolved.
