In my current practice I am most interested in light, space and the movement of time.
My work is inspired by natural forms and the landscape. I am interested in light, structure and decay. My work is emotional, reflective and observational. I give priority to mark making on the surface space of the blank canvas. I place an emphasis on investigation rather than representation. I am also interested in the spiritual dimension of creativity.
In my current practice I am most interested in light, space and the movement of time. Flowers in advanced states of structural decay is a subject that holds me, principally because their forms become more structural and elegant as they deteriorate. I have also worked in self-portrait and landscape. I always work from observation, with some room for expansion in the studio once a clear set of drawings are established. My work is emotional and reflective and asks the viewer to re-consider death and decay, as it asks ‘can dead flowers be beautiful?’ In this subtle way, my work questions the throw-away ethic of contemporary society. I think art has a role to play in wider ethical debates about impermanence.
