Kathleen Ellen Theriault Canada
“My art is an exploration of life, translated through layers of paint and personal experience,” says Theriault. Her pieces, not just abstract forms, are reflections of emotion, memory, and place. Each painting is a dialogue between intention and improvisation, shifting dynamically as it develops. Theriault is deeply inspired by nature, not as a literal subject, but as a guide to creating art.
Art as Reflection There is a meditative quality to my creative process. I build up layers of paint slowly, allowing each to inform the next, embracing those moments when a painting takes an unexpected turn and moves beyond my original intention. It is often in these surprises that the most compelling elements of my work emerge. I do not seek to control every detail. Instead, I let the painting guide me, trusting that the process itself will lead to something meaningful. This openness results in artworks that feel both spontaneous and deeply considered. I hope my paintings offer viewers a space for contemplation. I am drawn to scenes that invite reflection and provide a sense of respite. Through color, texture, and form, I aim to evoke memories of cherished places, inspire dreams of future destinations, and offer a meditative escape into the beauty of the natural world. In our fast-moving lives, I want my art to be an invitation to pause—to step into a moment of quiet, to let the colors and textures wash over you, and to feel, even briefly, as though you are somewhere familiar, even if that place exists only in your mind.
