Jack Sanderson-Thwaite Gloucestershire, United Kingdom
I'm a writer and artist working across multiple media. I am the creator of The Infinity of Lists, an ongoing project in which I curate and create inventive, curious lists. The project began as a newsletter but has gradually expanded into a wider creative practice incorporating site-responsive lists, exhibition trail installations, and digital art experiences.
Most recently, I was Writer-in-Residence for the Quay Words programme at Exeter Custom House. During the residency, I created a list-based exhibition trail of graphic artworks, projections, and participatory lists that responded to the history of the building and the archive of writing produced through Quay Words. I also created a 'Magpie', an interactive digital art experience that guided participants to create their own lists. The project reinforced my interest in archives as creative spaces and in using lists as a way of uncovering hidden stories and surprising connections. I am keen to expand this site-specific part of my practice and learn more about the spatial aspect of site-specific installation, as well as the design, typography and display of lists in a graphic form.
I am drawn to lists because they are familiar and accessible, while also able to be playful, poetic and surprising. They are one of the oldest literary forms, but continue to adapt and develop, used in ever-new ways online. Lists allow very different things to sit alongside one another without hierarchy, creating unexpected connections and encouraging those who encounter them, to see familiar subjects from a different angle.
Much of my work is also informed by folklore, myth, ritual, and the uncanny. I'm interested in the ways people create meaning, whether through local traditions, religious or esoteric practices, or niche internet communities.
As co-director of Modern Ritual Theatre, my show Our Blood Is An Ocean won a Toast of Plymouth Fringe Award, and my theatre work has been presented at venues including Bristol Old Vic and the Tobacco Factory. My audio drama The Flock was nominated for a British Podcast Award and reached the UK Fiction Podcast Top Ten. I am also co-founder of Two Headed Alien, a games studio supported by the UK Games Fund and Creative Enterprise.
Across all this work, I am interested in finding unusual ways to tell stories and reveal meaning.
