Jenette Coldrick Morrell Lincolnshire, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

Jenette Coldrick Morrell has been been a compulsive artist and potter for over 60 years. Born in Cornwall in 1952, she was inspired by the artists she met as a child, who encouraged her to watch and participate in the creative process. Over the years she has experimented with and embraced many different mediums. Finding simpler ways of working, has enhanced the character of her work

Jenette’s art explores the relationship between the mental and the physical.

“Do the marks I form commence with me, or do they merely conclude here?” This question lies at the heart of her practice. Throughout her life, she has been aware of boundaries—those she has set for her own wellbeing and those imposed by others or by circumstance. Recently, she undertook the task of cataloguing her life’s work before age might diminish her cognitive abilities. In doing so, she uncovered, acknowledged and accepted a deeply personal subconscious narrative.

Threads from one work reappear in another. The mental has become inseparably entwined with the physical. Fibres in fabric, marks on paper and canvas, and the deliberate cracks and crevasses in her pottery all reflect a continuing dialogue between experience, memory, heritage and personal development.

Working primarily in mixed media on paper, board and canvas, Jenette creates works that reveal the interconnectedness of thought, emotion and material form. She also maintains a small pottery studio equipped with a variety of disability aids and adaptive tools, enabling her to continue making work despite physical challenges.

Installation art has long been one of her passions, although opportunities to pursue this aspect of her practice have been limited by the realities of living and working with disability. Nevertheless, the spirit of installation—its engagement with space, memory and physical presence—continues to inform her artistic vision.
