Jo Forbes North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

Jo is embarking upon her final year as a mature fine art student at the Northern School of Art. She enjoys the process of investigating her landscape via graphite, paint, photography and collage. Her Interest in the emotional, historical and environmental aspects of the landscape give her purpose and warmth.

Jo Forbes is a painter and drawer of the landscape with an emphasis on emotional connection, geological forms, environmental issues, historical links and a sense of ‘journey’ within her practice. Jo started responding to landscapes whilst growing up in the Sussex countryside and became especially passionate about portraying her hometown of 20 years; Brighton. She is interested in mark making and will often let her pencil or paintbrush guide her while she opens her mind to emotions that the scene evokes. She is interested in how landscapes change dramatically by season and different light effects. She usually researches the land either in a historical or environmental approach. Her passion is to sketch and paint on location to truly capture the essence of the landscape. Jo also uses studio time to extensively investigate the way a landscape draws her in and aims to find the lesser-known route to portray the landscape in an abstracted manner. She might choose to focus on one aspect of the landscape that excites her and use this motif as a catalyst. Working quickly and instinctively Jo can sometimes be observed working on several pieces at once. She will often use layers of painting or collage underneath her expressive surface to build a momentum through her preparatory work that culminates in a larger work. The end goal aims to encapsulate an emotional response and symbiotic relationship with the landscape.
