I’m a mixed media artist living on the south coast of England. I build layered, three-dimensional surfaces from transparent painted and printed materials, embellished with inks and pinned to a laser-cut acrylic frame, so that colour, pattern and light appear to float and shift. Fixed translucent layers allow light to travel through them changing the imagery to create texture and depth.

I’m fascinated by the interaction of colour and light, why particular colours move me and whether that feeling can be passed to a viewer. Colour carries an energy and exuberance that I’ve always been drawn to and I’m curious about the way materials work together so mine is a practice of experimentation. Unexpected results are often where the gold lies so asking ‘What If?’ keeps me open to taking risks, seeking out solutions and discovering new combinations in the making. Music is another important thread that often acts as a subliminal feed. For me there’s a deep connection between the layering of colour, shade and pattern with the layering of sound, tone and texture in musical composition and I see it reflected in the rhythm of marks and gestures I use. A new piece begins as thoughts and takes time to percolate before any making begins. Patterns caught in passing, textures, marks that leave their trace and responses to music create ideas that float over time, shifting and settling until they form a rhythm I can almost see and they feel ready to turn into something more tangible. Then it’s an organic process of assembling colour, pattern and texture as layers, like painting in three dimensions.
