I am a colourist painter, working from my garden studio in Somerset. My work is about landscape including trees, castle ruins, reflections, and seascapes. The emphasis is on colour, light and composition using layers of paint, resulting in a rich tapestry of hue and texture.

I have been drawing or painting ever since being able to hold a crayon. Eventually I studied Graphic Design at Canterbury College of Art when I started to understand the use and joy of colour, as well as doing life drawing once a week for three years, a valuable lesson. My influences are from Bauhaus, the Scottish Colourists and the Glasgow Boys – my grandmother in Northumberland had a selection of paintings from the 1950’s which inspired my work.

I now consider myself a colourist, with series of landscapes including trees, castle ruins, and reflections in water. My emphasis is on colour, light and composition using layers of paint and glazing, plus a variety of media. The result is a rich tapestry of hue and texture where the abstract nature of the work becomes figurative. My latest work is a series of seascapes from Cornwall to St Abbs Head. I am experimenting more with mixed media including oil. acrylic mediums and gouache.

Over the years I have taken courses in colour work and fine art. I have exhibited paintings since 1980, designed home accessories, run art courses and given art demonstrations & workshops.

I have undertaken several commissions, in particular portraits of houses and favourite vistas, and am currently working on a painting of a local house and 15th century mill.
