Leslie Wilson-Rutterford Greater London, United Kingdom
Born 1957 and raised by artist parents, I've been immersed in creativity all my life. I completed an AA in art before emigrating to London, settling, working as a professional seamstress, and having 2 boys 18 years apart (1983, 2001). Acquired a BA in Interior Architecture in 2000. My art and craft has emerged and evolved in various forms and waves across the 40+ years I've lived here.
For the last 4 years, I've been involved with 2 local art and textile groups, which have fired up new passion and directions in my output and often combining the 2 disciplines. My background in and love of art going back to the 50s, as a seamstress for designers and, for the last 17 years, a vintage collector and trader, I've had my fingers on many cultural buzzes over my lifetime. I'm inspired by and drawn to old materials and new concepts and tend to make pairs or trios in a mode, and then try another. Over the last 2 years I've been moving between soft textile compositions to hard abstract assemblages using preused children's building blocks and shapes. Almost always utilising existing materials or media, with a vision to re-imagine or transform their usual purpose, invoking new visual languages and bridging the old with the new. Drawing upon my skills as an artist, craftsperson, designer I delve into elements of my own life, but also observed and shared social and cultural themes.
