L U C Y W A T E R S

Master of Fine Art | Newcastle University | 2021 - 23 / BA Fine Art | Newcastle University | 2017 - 2021

My practice currently involves researching and examining the socio-economic scope of the Northeast of England and making work in response to my findings. The entirely hand painted, repurposed, charity shop bought ceramic pieces, are a playful but out of kilter nod to traditional blue tableware – that often features my family home and the street that I live on, in Newcastle, as a reoccurring motif. I employ the use of text throughout my pieces in order to scoff at, make reference to, and to highlight the ludicrousness of such socio-politically derived language. The text is often lifted from lengthier extracts, can be commonly used phrases, or is taken from particular quotes and statistics. Although I approach this through a very particular Northern based lens, the significance of the concept and message as a whole, can be applied in a much broader sense, resonating greatly with the current climate we find ourselves living within.
