Martin Donlin United Kingdom
I am an architectural glass artist specialising in large-scale, site-specific artworks. Over the course of my career, I have completed and project-managed a significant number of commissions worldwide. All of my work is within the field of public art, with more than 100 commissions installed in public spaces, including over 25 projects throughout the United States.
Some of my commissions rank among the largest public art schemes in the world and include projects for airports, convention centres, hospitals, law courts, police headquarters, churches, schools, libraries, theatres, commercial developments, and civic buildings. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with internationally respected architects, including Sir Norman Foster and Sir Terrance Conran. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: The majority of my projects are designed to operate on multiple levels: creating a bold visual impact from a distance while revealing intricate details and layers of meaning upon closer inspection. My artworks are intended to be experienced both day and night and are designed to be viewed from both inside and outside the building or site. My practice is inspired by the character of new places and the people who will ultimately experience the finished artwork. I strive to create works that are accessible, engaging, and welcoming, while maintaining a strong respect for the identity, history, and integrity of the location. COLABORATION IDEAS: In previous projects, I have collaborated closely with end-user groups, writers, poets, and historians to explore and interpret the stories of a place or the purpose of a building. These narratives have often informed and inspired the final artwork, and in many cases have been incorporated directly into the design itself. Recent commissions have also included a variety of materials and disciplines such as Terrazzo, Stainless Steel and Mosaic
